Where will you be celebrating the long bank holiday weekend? 

The Platinum Jubilee marks 70 years of commendable service that Her Majesty The Queen has given to the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. 

 

A four-day UK Bank Holiday from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June gives venues ample opportunity to celebrate this anniversary with all communities to observe this historic milestone in style.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HER MAJESTY

Get up-to-date on the history of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II before the celebrations in June.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, the eldest daughter of Prince Albert, Duke of York, was born on April 21st 1926. 

In late 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson. As a result, Elizabeth’s father became Kind George VI. Elizabeth was now the heir to the throne. 

Elizabeth’s engagement to Prince Philip of Greece was announced. They were married on 20th November 1947. 

Charles, Prince of Wales, was born in 1948. The next heir to the throne. 

Elizabeth steps in for sick father in state duties including the tour of Australia and New Zealand, making a stop at Kenya en-route. 

King George VI dies from lung cancer at the age of 56. His 25-year-old becomes the sixth woman in history to ascend to the British throne.

The formal coronation as Queen Elizabeth II took place on 2nd June 1953 in Westminister Abbey. 

The Silver Jubilee in 1977 marked 25 years on the throne and was a bright spot in an era of economic struggle. 

2002 marked the Golden Jubilee to celebrate 50 years on the throne.  

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 celebrates 70 years of service and sacrifice for her country and people.
