Drink Warehouse UK Blogs

Well, find out here.

Gin doesn’t tend to be my go-to drink, though I am always on the hunt for rising stars within underdog sister categories. Think what Cava is to Champagne or Armagnac / Calvados to is to Cognac (if you haven’t explored these categories – get right on it, there’s some real hidden gems). With this approach, Jenever (pronounced locally as ‘yen-nay-ver’) has been on my radar for quite some time, on the hunt for something that can bring me back to the love of gin.

While not strictly a gin, jenever is the precursor to our Juinper infused British tipple. So inspired by the ‘Dutch Courage’ witnessed by British soldiers of the bold rush to arms by Dutch soldiers during the Thirty Years War. While not as popular as gin, distilleries like the Herman Jansen distillery who produce Bobby’s have been continually innovating for well over two centuries to refine their Jenever production process to keep the spirit as relevant today as it was in the 17th century.

From the beautiful minimalist design paying homage to heritage Jenever bottles, to the harmony between fresh & bold spices, showcased exceptionally when mixed Bobby’s Jenever wins as my top spirit for this month.

With the Indonesian spices as well has the hardier backbone gained through the addition of malt spirit (the thing that distinguishes as a jenever over a gin), I find it stands up really well with some bolder mixers such as Pink Grapefruit soda or Ginger Ale. It goes equally well with straight soda and a few dashes of grapefruit or cherry bitters.

Get a bottle in and experiment. There’s so much that you can do with this. It will not disappoint.

Bobby’s Gin is a refined expression of Dutch Courage fuelled with Indonesian spirit. A fresh and spice-forward combination of ‘Schiedam’ gin botanicals like juniper, fennel seeds, coriander, and rose hips, and traditional Indonesian spices from grandfather Jacobus ‘Bobby’ Alfons’ Pinang Raci recipe, like lemongrass, cloves, cinnamon, and cubeb peppers.
